Social Media Influencers

My wife is currently at nursing school at UAH, and one thing I always hear her talk about is this funny guy that makes posts about nursing on facebook. His name? Nurse Blake.

Nurse Blake currently has over 565k followers on facebook, and makes posts that those in the nursing field can relate to (At least according to my wife). Most of his videos go through “the struggles that nurses go though on a day-to-day basis” and his goal is to bring laughter and joy to all those who watch his videos.

He represents the healthcare field very well, bringing light to many different crucial topics including stem cell research and the viewpoints of vaccines.

Nurse Blake keeps his viewers well informed and is a big influencer in the world of nursing.

Social Media in Times of Tragedy

Social Media is such a vital tool to have when tragedy strikes. Platforms such as Facebook allow you mark yourself as safe when tragedy strikes. For some, this may be the only way to know if your loved ones have made it through tragedy. While social media provides a pathway for those to express their thoughts and feelings during tragic times, it also allows to companies to respond through social media. How a company reacts to tragedy on social media can directly affect their branding. There are many Do’s and Don’ts that companies should follow as events are unfolding. This list is referenced by my personal friend and business acquaintance, Brian Williams.

Do: Suspend any and all automated messaging as events are still unfolding.

Dont: Use topical situations to try and sell something. Ever.

Do: Silently use company resources to fundraise and/or build awareness.

Don’t: Use company resources to forward personal, socio-political stances on an issue.

Do: Be mindful of future messaging that may be deemed questionable, no matter how unintentional.

Don’t: Go about business as if nothing has happened at all. It’s understandable that not all businesses are going to have a vested interest in the aftermath of national or global tragedies, but that shouldn’t make you exempt from being able to show compassion and empathy in the process.

Facebook Brand Survey

For this assignment, I took a look at the Facebook page for one of my favorite tech companies: Apple, Inc. Everyone knows who Apple is, the kind of products they make, and has an opinion on wether they like the company or not. When you are a company with a reputation as large as Apple’s, do you really need much social media presence? The obvious answer to me personally is “Yes, because more presence won’t hurt your company”, but when you take a look at Apple’s Facebook page, you’ll find much different results. Apple has not made a post to its Facebook page since November 20th of 2018.

Apple’s posts mainly consist of videos featuring their products, not many posts with just picture advertisements. However, their videos collect somewhere between 150k-500k views per video-and that is just on Facebook. It looks like these posts receive lost of shares and comments as well, so the little attention that Apple gives Facebook does seem to pay off.

I would recommend that they try to engage more with their audience on facebook by making more posts more frequently, and possibly responding to individuals more in the comments.

Unwired Day

Going device free for 24 hours? It may not seem that hard to do at first, until you actually try to do it.

As a society, we have become so glued to our phones. They are just an extension of ourselves. We live our lives on them, communicate with each other on them, buy food on them, everything! So when it came to trying to become unwired all day for this assignment, it was not easy at all.

9 AM – Woke up, took my shower and was getting ready for breakfast. Caught myself trying to check my phone and turn on the tv to start my day. It was awkward sitting in silence.

11AM – Started my drive to work, music free from my phone. I had to sing to myself, and it was kinda scary.

2 PM – Had the chance to do some office work, but only did paperwork and no computer work. I am still behind on paying bills and checking my emails.

4 PM- Started interviewing more applicants for the store. After hiring two new employees, I could not go. on the computer to finish creating their paperwork.

6 PM – Started my drive home. Had to sing to myself again. People stared.

THIS is where things get ugly…..no time for the Xbox.

After work, I typically spend 3-5 hours playing Xbox, more specifically Fortnite. More than I should ever play a game in the day, but it is why way of unwinding. This almost broke me, but I stayed strong and didn’t cave to the temptation.

It was a difficult day, and I realized that technology is so integrated into our lives, it is almost [seemingly] impossible to do anything. I think I will stick to my Apple Music, Netflix, and Fortnite.

Goals

Hey Guys! My name is Riley, and I want to create this blog to show examples of how businesses use social media to market their products or services successfully.

I am also creating this blog for a Course I am currently taking in school. Three Goals I have for this course are to:

  1. Have a better understanding of how social media impacts businesses.
  2. Learn how to create social media content that is useful for advertising.
  3. Apply what I learn in this course to my own business.
